  • 55+ Defensive Driving Refresher Course

    IMPORTANT NOTE! Registration for this course is not taken through Orono Community Education. For more information and to register for this course, go to mnsafetycenter.org or call TOLL FREE 1(888)-234-1294. The Driver Improvement course is a state approved accident prevention/insurance discount course that is open to the public. Pre-registration is required. A MN Highway Safety & Research Center certified instructor teaches this class. By utilizing the most up-to-date research in the field, participants will be provided the latest information in regards to driver and traffic safety, new laws, and vehicle technology. Persons ages 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a 10% discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. First time participants must complete the initial eight hours of training and a four hour refresher class every three years to maintain the 10% discount.

    Beginner Ladies Golf

    This program is structured for ladies who want to understand the overall mechanics of the golf swing. You will learn the full swing as well as the short game (chipping, pitching and putting). The main goal of this program is to have fun and be able to manage yourself around the golf course. Range balls are included and clubs are available if needed. There will be a chance to play on the course on the last night. Please dress for the weather. Registration Deadline: May 16th for the June session and June 20 for the July session. Weather Policy - In the event of severe weather, the class will be made up if possible.

    Bicycle Repair & Maintenance - Beginner Class

    Learn basic bike set up, identification, shifting adjustments, brake adjustments, how to safely check your bike, preparing a bike for selling, as well as many other helpful tips and tricks. Time will be available to fix many of the mechanical issues you are facing. Please bring your bike to class. Great value when you factor in a basic tune up!
  • Bicycle Repair & Maintenance - Intermediate Class

    This class will build from basic to more advanced. Many of your bike issues can be solved in this class! Major focus will be on identification of bicycle parts, trailside repair, shifting adjustments, brake adjustments, chain maintenance, how to repair/replace a tube (flat tire) and how to safety check your bike. We will also learn basic wheel truing, replacing a chain, how to replace brake and shifting cables. Please plan to bring a bike, especially one that needs work! Great value when you factor in a tune up!
  • Block Printing Cotton Tote Workshop

    Draw and print your own tote bag. This course is designed to get you acquainted with the basics of block printing. Create a drawing and then learn how to transfer and carve the drawing into a lino block. Use printing ink to print the design onto your tote bag, making it completely custom. Leave with new skills in this awesome art medium AND with your carved block to recreate your design over and over again at home! The tote bag and lino block supplies are included in your enrollment fee. Call to register participants ages 14-17 (must attend with an enrolled adult).

    CPR, First Aid & AED

    This blended learning (online learning and in-person skills) session will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. Successful participants will receive a 2-year Red Cross certificate for Adult and Pediatric (infant and child) CPR, First Aid and AED. Register at least 10 days prior to the in-person skills date, as adequate time is needed to complete the online learning portion PRIOR to testing for the skills. This will allow you the time to complete lessons at your own pace. You will need to provide the instructor with proof of online completion in order to take part in the skills testing. Online learning details will be sent via email. A personal email address is required to receive class content. A work-affiliated email address will not work.     Canva is the perfect digital tool for beginners and novices! In this class you will learn how to create designs from scratch or use templates with step-by-step guidance for any digital image you need. This class is taught live online via ZOOM. If you are unable to attend the live online training time, you can still register and watch the recording of the training at your convenience. Follow-up support is also included.

    Time will fly by in this fun, fast-paced class where you will kick, punch and twist to the music all while working on your cardio. Modifications are given so all levels are welcome. Call to register participants ages 14-17 (must attend with an enrolled adult).
  • Charcuterie 101

    Ever wonder where to begin when planning your charcuterie board? What to buy, how to cut, prepare or arrange your items and how to make that cool salami rose? Learn all of the basics in techniques, food pairings and educational background on the foods used. Have fun with family and friends during class at a local venue, the Iron Exchange in Maple Plain. Due to table space, food is available for purchase before or after class. However, beverages are available at anytime. A link to pay the ingredients fee of $45 will be sent via email one week prior to class. Bring home a new experience, a helpful grocery list for future boards PLUS an artfully arranged 10” charcuterie board (serves 5-6 people) to enjoy right away! *Due to cost of high-quality ingredients, any cancellations or no shows after the three business day cancellation policy, will still be responsible to pay the supply fee of $45. You are welcome to pick up your supplies at the Iron Exchange (pickup within 24 hours) if interested in completing a charcuterie board on your own.

    Cooking for College and Beyond!

    Learn all of the essential cooking basics before heading to college or off on your own! Chef Noah will teach you how to prep, cook and store some simple and delicious meals. He will also talk about key ingredients and tools to store at your dorm/apartment/condo. Parents and caregivers, this is a GREAT opportunity for your soon-to-be, independent cook!
  • Family Yoga

    Enjoy quality time with your family while moving your bodies. This class features low impact movements, fun breathing exercises, partner poses and more. Children are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal along as a breathing buddy during class. Best for children age 5+. Only one adult per family needs to register. You will be asked to include names/ages of participants on that adult enrollment. Please bring yoga mats if you have them. Extra mats are available if needed.
  • Fitness Punch Card

    Purchase a Fitness Punch Card and drop into any adult fitness class on your time and your schedule. This is the perfect option if you cannot commit to a full class or want to try multiple different types of classes. Punch cards are valid for 6 months. Purchase another card if you run out of punches! Punch cards are kept in the Activities Center Fitness Room (30 & 31). The punch card is NOT VALID for pickleball classes, aquatics programs, virtual classes, private lessons or open gyms. Senior and Activities Center Membership discounts can not be applied toward a Punch Card purchase. Please contact our office at 952-449-8350 to confirm that a class has enough enrollments to run before dropping in for the first time.
  • Fused Glass Garden Art

    Embellish your garden pot, patio planter or flower bed with colorful fused glass. A $20 material fee is payable to the instructors at class. You will make one totem and one stake. If you want to make additional items during class, an additional material fee will need to be paid. Due to the fusing cycle, you will need to return to the studio the following Wednesday evening or make arrangements with the instructors to pick up your piece. This unique piece will bring a flash of color to your garden or yard!

    Fused Glass Open Studio provides time and space to create fused glass projects for beginner and advanced participants. A facilitator will be on hand for advice and support. A $25 supply fee will be collected at the studio for each new punch card. Participants are asked to bring their own glass (COE90-preferred), cutting tools and molds (sharing of materials is also an option). It is recommended that participants have taken at least one fused glass class before joining Open Studio. Punch cards have 8 punches and are valid for 12 months.

    This bird bath is made with a terra-cotta drip tray. It is decorated with pieces of stained glass then grouted at the next class. This beautiful bird bath can be placed on the ground, on a wrought iron stand or other fun options. If weather permits, we will grout outside. A $15 supply fee is payable to the instructor at class. Leave with some of her favorite worksheets, two of her favorite brush pens, techniques to continue your learning, and a piece of your own work to take home!     Instant Guitar for Hopelessly Busy People - Virtual Class

    Have you ever wanted to learn the guitar but simply find it difficult to find the time? In just a few hours, you can learn enough about playing the guitar to give you years of musical enjoyment, and you won’t have to take private lessons to do it. This course will teach basic chords and get you playing along with your favorite songs right away. Since this class is being held online with ZOOM, you will be able to sit at home with your guitar and take this class without any pressure at all. The class includes an online book, online follow-up video lessons and a recording of the class so you will be able to continue your practice and study on your own. An optional online question and answer session is also included. Topics include: how chords work in a song, how to form the three main types of chords, how to tune your guitar, basic strumming patterns, how to buy a good guitar (things to avoid) and how to play along with simple tunes. Participants ages 13-17 must have an adult guardian present during the virtual lesson.
