    Adult Aqua Exercise

    Join us for a low impact, double benefit workout. This class will benefit your joints and overall health by working on cardio and resistance training. Although you need not be a swimmer, participants should be comfortable in the water. Aqua shoes are recommended. Aquatic fitness punch cards do not apply toward this class.

    All Wet! Activity Camp

    YOU MUST ALSO REGISTER AND PAY FOR A SWIMMING LESSON THAT IS SCHEDULED IN THE 9 AM - 12 PM TIME FRAME DURING CORRESPONDING WEEKS. Amp up your morning fun! Designed to be a complement to swimming lessons, this option will fill the time before or after your swimming lessons that occur during our morning 9 am - 12 pm camp time. Outdoor activities may include sprinkler fun, water balloon tosses, giant yard games and more! Indoor time will be spent on water-related science experiments and art projects. Also, play board games, do puzzles and explore our activity boxes. Send sunscreen that your child can apply on their own.

    Diving Camp - Intermediate & Advanced

    This camp is for students in grades 7-12 who have had some past experience with diving. Whether you have taken diving camps before or are already on a high school team looking for continuous instruction in the off-season, this camp is for you! Sarah is a trained high school diving coach that will provide instruction on intermediate to advanced diving skills.

    Diving Camp - Intro & Intermediate

    This camp is designed for beginner to intermediate divers in grades 3-6. Beginner participants will learn fundamental diving skills and basic dives in this class. These divers will start with diving from the side of the pool and progress to a front dive with approach from the diving board. If students have already taken an intro class once before, the intermediate divers will work on more advanced skills in this class which will help them to prepare for competitive diving in the future.
  • Early Learning Splash Hour

    Spend an hour in the pool with your young swimmer. Toys, floaties and balls provided. Parent/guardian must accompany the child in the water. Coast Guard-approved life jacket recommended. If there are two or more children per adult, all children must wear a life jacket. Swim diapers are required for children not potty-trained. Check-in at the Community Education office through Door E24. Please bring your ID for entry into the school building. You do not need to pre-register. Session will show as full but it is NOT full.

    Lap Swim

    Dates: January 3 - May 31 Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 6:15 - 7:30 am Tuesday & Thursday Lunchtime Lap: 12:00 - 1:00 pm (Locker rooms are available) There are six lanes available for lap swim and the diving well is accessible for self-guided aqua exercise. Morning lap swim is open to adults and students over 15 years of age. Lunchtime lap swim is for adults 18 years or older. Check-in at the Community Education office through Door E24.     Masters Swim

    Participants must register with US Masters swimming at www.usms.org. U.S. Masters Swimming is a national membership-oriented nonprofit that provides membership benefits to swimmers across the country. Self-led with swim workouts available upon request.     Masters Swim

    Participants must register with US Masters swimming at www.usms.org. The Membership is $52 for the calendar year, which includes the US Masters and MN Masters registration fees.     Open Swim

    Payment is taken at the pool - cash or check accepted. You do not need to pre-register. Drop in when your schedule allows. Two lanes will be available for lap swim. *Saturday afternoon open swim will resume in September.

    Private Lessons for Competitive Swimmers

    These lessons will be detailed technique sessions for competitive swimmers ages 12 and older. Swimmers will identify a specific stroke or aspect of swimming (starts, turns, breakouts, etc.) and the sessions will be dedicated to not only identifying areas of opportunity, but making corrections and providing guidance on how to implement them in their everyday swimming. It is recommended to register for a minimum of two to three lessons since detailed corrections take time, focus and repetition. Lesson fee is $90 per 30 minute lesson.
  • Red Cross Lifeguard Training

    Earn your lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross. Our lifeguard certification courses are designed to ensure that you are properly trained in the event of a water emergency. Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is valid for two years from the date of completion. This course will meet in person and online and includes lifeguard skills, CPR, First Aid and AED training.     Each swimmer must register individually. Please register online to add your name to the waitlist. Due to high demand for these lessons, you/your student may take only 4 private or semi-private lessons this Summer season. You must pay for the complete session, no reimbursement for missed lessons. Lessons will be scheduled in order by date registration is received. We will connect with you to coordinate a time that works based on schedule availability. You will be charged for the lessons once they are scheduled. Pre-assessments take place at the Orono pool. Instructors will guide your swimmer through a set of skills in a 15-minute period. Summer pre-assessments will take place in early March 2024. • Fall 2024 pre-assessments will take place in early August 2024. • Contact Tara St. Martin to schedule a pre-assessment at tara.st.martin@orono.k12.mn.us. • Note: Attending a pre-assessment does not guarantee a spot in lessons. Spots fill quickly. Please limit registration to one swim camp per child for Summer. Introduction to Water Skills MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD. No Prerequisites. Tentative in and around water, uncomfortable submerging head and not yet floating independently. Course Content: Helps participants feel comfortable in the water. Skills covered include: bobbing, retrieving objects underwater, front and back glides, back float, tread water using arms and hands, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, bob 3 times then safely exit the water. (Participants can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 3 seconds and recover to a vertical position. (This part of the assessment can be performed with support.) Fundamental Aquatics Skills Course Content: Gives participants success with fundamental skills. Skills covered include: front, jellyfish and tuck floats, roll from front to back and back to front, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, treading of water, combined arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to vertical position. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. Sign up for Level 2 if: • Comfortable in the water • Submerges head • Floats independently Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. Stroke Development Course Content: Builds on skills with practice in deeper water. Skills covered include: headfirst entries from side in sitting and kneeling positions, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, survival float, flutter, dolphin and scissors kick, front crawl, elementary backstroke, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards. Sign up for Level 3 if: • Comfortable in deep water • Swims at least 5 yards on front with a coordinated stroke independently • Swims at least 5 yards on back with a coordinated stroke independently Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. Exit Skills: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards. Sign up for Level 4 if: • Comfortable in deep water • Swims at least 15 yards coordinated: front crawl, back crawl and knows dolphin kick and breaststroke kick. Exit skills: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 5 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 25 yards. Sign up for Level 5 if: • Comfortable in deep water • Swims at least 25 yards of the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke • Swims 15 yards coordinated of the following strokes: breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly LEVEL 6 - Swimming and Skill Proficiency Course Content: Students will learn to swim with ease and efficiency, and gain the ability to swim smoothly over greater distances. Skills covered include: shallow angle dive from the side, surface dives, front and back flip turns, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, standard scull, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit skills: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 5 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 25 yards.     Swim Lessons: Parent/Child

    Ages 6 months - 2 years A parent/adult is required to accompany each child in the water. Course Content: Familiarizes young children to the water. Gives parent safety information and teaches techniques to help orient children to the water, it also provides direction regarding how to supervise water activities in a responsible manner. These courses are a bonding experience that will fill parents and children with wonderful lifelong memories. Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program.     Swim Lessons: Preschool Level 1 - Parent & Child

    Ages 3-5 A parent/adult must accompany child in the water. Course Content: The primary objective of Preschool Aquatics is to promote developmentally appropriate learning for preschool age children. Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them to gain basic aquatic skills. No Prerequisites. This level is for the swimmer with little to no water and swimming experience, does not like going under water, or for the fearful or scared preschool aged swimmer. Familiarizes young children to the water. Gives parent safety information and teaches techniques to help orient children to the water, it also provides direction regarding how to supervise water activities in a responsible manner. Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. For questions about what level your child should register for, refer to our descriptions.     Swim Lessons: Preschool Level 2

    Ages 3 - 5 Parent/adult may accompany child in the water. Course Content: Helps preschool age children gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around the water building on the skills of Preschool 1. Preschool 2 is for the swimmer who is comfortable in the water. This level will work toward greater independence floating and swimming in the water.     Water Safety

    With the variety of accessible beaches, lakes and pools in our community, water safety is a MUST! Parents, sign up your 11-14 year old to take this class on pool and beach water safety, water rescue and safe boating. Participants will engage in interactive stations throughout the day as they learn from an American Red Cross trained Lifeguarding Instructor. There will be a short break for lunch in between stations. This class is not a swim lesson. Participants must already be able to swim 100 yards and tread water for 30 seconds independently. Rest assured that your child will receive some crucial, life saving information as they start to become more independent around the water. Please bring a swimsuit, towel, water bottle and lunch.
