  • 55+ Defensive Driving Refresher Course

    IMPORTANT NOTE! Registration for this course is not taken through Orono Community Education. For more information and to register for this course, go to mnsafetycenter.org or call TOLL FREE 1(888)-234-1294. The Driver Improvement course is a state approved accident prevention/insurance discount course that is open to the public. Pre-registration is required. A MN Highway Safety & Research Center certified instructor teaches this class. By utilizing the most up-to-date research in the field, participants will be provided the latest information in regards to driver and traffic safety, new laws, and vehicle technology. Persons ages 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a 10% discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. First time participants must complete the initial eight hours of training and a four hour refresher class every three years to maintain the 10% discount.

    ACT College Examination Preparatory Course

    Advantage Educational Programs gives students the option of preparing for the ACT exam in two different ways: the in-person ACT Preparatory Course or the online ACT Preparatory Course. Both courses are designed for students who want to maximize their ACT exam score, as well as those who feel uneasy about their test-taking skills or who have taken the exam and aren’t satisfied with their results. The course includes diagnostic testing, instruction in time management, overcoming test anxiety, science reasoning, English strategies and review, essay writing, reading comprehension, math strategies and review. Please bring notebook paper, pencils, calculator and a small 3-ring binder or folder to class. Students enrolled in these classes not only benefit from personal instruction provided by our experienced instructors, but also have free access to our online course. Any students who are registering as repeat students who have previously paid should register for the self-paced virtual class at no charge.

    This course is an excellent alternative for any student unable to attend an in-person class, but still prefers the interaction with an instructor. The live virtual ACT prep course is the same as the in-person ACT course, but from the comfort of your own home. Our instructors teach live via Zoom and are available to answer questions if needed. You will need an internet connection and a computer/tablet/smart phone. Instruction for all areas tested will be provided with focal points on diagnostic testing, science reasoning, math review and strategies, reading comprehension improvement, English strategies, writing essays, overcoming test anxiety and time management. Please have notebook paper, pencils and a calculator available. Once enrolled, students are sent a link via email for their class.     Register for the self-paced online course and have access and complete preparation for the ACT at your own pace. Register for this section through May 31, 2024. Instruction for all areas tested will be provided with focal points on diagnostic testing, science reasoning, math review and strategies, reading comprehension improvement, English strategies, writing essays, overcoming test anxiety and time management. Please have notebook paper, pencils and a calculator available for class. Students may repeat the course as often as they desire for no additional cost. Once enrolled, students are sent an access code for their class via email and can begin preparing right away. VERY IMPORTANT - you must have a Google account with a @gmail.com email address in order to access the Online ACT Prep Course through Google Classroom.   • Bicycle Repair & Maintenance - Beginner Class

    Learn basic bike set up, identification, shifting adjustments, brake adjustments, how to safely check your bike, preparing a bike for selling, as well as many other helpful tips and tricks. Time will be available to fix many of the mechanical issues you are facing. Please bring your bike to class. Great value when you factor in a basic tune up!
  • Bicycle Repair & Maintenance - Intermediate Class

    This class will build from basic to more advanced. Many of your bike issues can be solved in this class! Major focus will be on identification of bicycle parts, trailside repair, shifting adjustments, brake adjustments, chain maintenance, how to repair/replace a tube (flat tire) and how to safety check your bike. We will also learn basic wheel truing, replacing a chain, how to replace brake and shifting cables. Please plan to bring a bike, especially one that needs work! Great value when you factor in a tune up!
  • Block Printing Cotton Tote Workshop

    Draw and print your own tote bag. This course is designed to get you acquainted with the basics of block printing. Create a drawing and then learn how to transfer and carve the drawing into a lino block. Use printing ink to print the design onto your tote bag, making it completely custom. Leave with new skills in this awesome art medium AND with your carved block to recreate your design over and over again at home! The tote bag and lino block supplies are included in your enrollment fee. Call to register participants ages 14-17 (must attend with an enrolled adult).

    CPR, First Aid & AED

    This blended learning (online learning and in-person skills) session will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. Successful participants will receive a 2-year Red Cross certificate for Adult and Pediatric (infant and child) CPR, First Aid and AED. Register at least 10 days prior to the in-person skills date, as adequate time is needed to complete the online learning portion PRIOR to testing for the skills. This will allow you the time to complete lessons at your own pace. You will need to provide the instructor with proof of online completion in order to take part in the skills testing. Online learning details will be sent via email. A personal email address is required to receive class content. A work-affiliated email address will not work.     Diving Camp - Intermediate/Advanced

    This camp is for students in grades 7-12 who have had some past experience with diving. Whether you have taken diving camps before or are already on a high school team looking for continuous instruction in the off-season, this camp is for you! Sarah is a trained high school diving coach that will provide instruction on intermediate to advanced diving skills.

    Diving Camp - Intro/Intermediate

    This camp is designed for beginner to intermediate divers in grades 3-6. Beginner participants will learn fundamental diving skills and basic dives in this class. These divers will start with diving from the side of the pool and progress to a front dive with approach from the diving board. If students have already taken an intro class once before, the intermediate divers will work on more advanced skills in this class which will help them to prepare for competitive diving in the future.
  • Early Learning Hour at the Orono Activities Center

    A time for families with children under the age of 5 to run, play and get the wiggles out at the Orono Activities Center. One court will be reserved and set-up with age-appropriate equipment. The walking track is available for use. Strollers can also be used. No need to pre-register online. Please check-in at the front desk upon arrival.
  • Early Learning Splash Hour

    Spend an hour in the pool with your young swimmer. Toys, floaties and balls provided. Parent/guardian must accompany the child in the water. Coast Guard-approved life jacket recommended. If there are two or more children per adult, all children must wear a life jacket. Swim diapers are required for children not potty-trained. Check-in at the Community Education office through Door E24. Please bring your ID for entry into the school building. You do not need to pre-register. Session will show as full but it is NOT full.

  • Fitness Punch Card

    Purchase a Fitness Punch Card and drop into any adult fitness class on your time and your schedule. This is the perfect option if you cannot commit to a full class or want to try multiple different types of classes. Punch cards are valid for 6 months. Purchase another card if you run out of punches! Punch cards are kept in the Activities Center Fitness Room (30 & 31). The punch card is NOT VALID for pickleball classes, aquatics programs, virtual classes, private lessons or open gyms. Senior and Activities Center Membership discounts can not be applied toward a Punch Card purchase. Please contact our office at 952-449-8350 to confirm that a class has enough enrollments to run before dropping in for the first time.

    Skyhawks flag football is the perfect program for young athletes who want a complete introduction to America's game or for those who simply want to brush up on their skills in preparation for league play. Through our 'skill of the day,' campers will learn skills on both sides of the ball including the core components of passing, catching and de-flagging or defensive positioning, all presented in a fun and positive environment!
  • From Nest to Next: A Workshop for Families of College-bound Students

    Following this workshop, families will have a sense of confidence about the next steps for their student after their admissions decision. Families will learn how to support their child through the transition from high school to college, practice self care (families and students) and navigate the language of college. This is a great opportunity to build a support network with fellow families of future first-year college students.
  • Fused Glass Garden Art

    Embellish your garden pot, patio planter or flower bed with colorful fused glass. A $20 material fee is payable to the instructors at class. You will make one totem and one stake. If you want to make additional items during class, an additional material fee will need to be paid. Due to the fusing cycle, you will need to return to the studio the following Wednesday evening or make arrangements with the instructors to pick up your piece. This unique piece will bring a flash of color to your garden or yard!
