    Adult Aqua Exercise

    Join us for a low impact, double benefit workout. This class will benefit your joints and overall health by working on cardio and resistance training. Although you need not be a swimmer, participants should be comfortable in the water. Aqua shoes are recommended. Aquatic fitness punch cards do not apply toward this class.

    All Wet! Activity Camp

    YOU MUST ALSO REGISTER AND PAY FOR A SWIMMING LESSON THAT IS SCHEDULED IN THE 9 AM - 12 PM TIME FRAME DURING CORRESPONDING WEEKS. Amp up your morning fun! Designed to be a complement to swimming lessons, this option will fill the time before or after your swimming lessons that occur during our morning 9 am - 12 pm camp time. Outdoor activities may include sprinkler fun, water balloon tosses, giant yard games and more! Indoor time will be spent on water-related science experiments and art projects. Also, play board games, do puzzles and explore our activity boxes. Send sunscreen that your child can apply on their own.
  • Kids Swim, Bike, Run Event

    Orono Community Education, in partnership with Performance Ready, invites you to join us for our third annual Kids Swim, Bike, Run event on Thursday, August 8! This event is recommended for kids ages 4-15. Get ready to “toe the start line!" Kids can participate in one of three divisions, with each division entailing a different duration of swimming, biking, and running. The swim will take place in the Orono pool. Kids will set up their bike and running gear at the loop by door E24 of the Orono Education Link building, with the bike and run taking place throughout the High School and Schumann/Education Link parking lots. There will be an inner loop for kids who have less experience biking. All kids will be close by so parents/guardians and fans can watch many of their participants at once making this a fun, family event! Check-in and set-up will start at 6:00 pm with the event starting at 7:00 pm and wrapping up by 8:00 pm. Please check in at the loop in front of door E24 of the Education Link. Each participant will receive a t-shirt, medal, race bib, post-race snacks, and a feeling of accomplishment. Participants will need a swimsuit, goggles (optional), bike, helmet, tennis shoes, athletic clothing, and a water bottle. There will be adult volunteers on hand to help kids with set-up and to walk them through the event. Participants will be swimming the perimeter of the pool so they will have the wall close by, but they should feel comfortable in the water. Kids are welcome to wear a lifejacket or use a pool noodle if they wish. At time of registration, you will select the preferred division. Kids will have the option to change divisions when they check-in. The ages mentioned are simply guidelines so feel free to register for the division that seems most appropriate for your child's abilities. **Registrations taken after Wednesday, July 24 will receive a t-shirt after the event date.** **Registrations will be taken at the event.** **Scholarships available.     Lap Swim

    Masters Swim

    Participants must register with US Masters swimming at www.usms.org. The Membership is $52 for the calendar year, which includes the US Masters and MN Masters registration fees. Fee is prorated depending on time of year you register. Swim workouts available upon request.     Open Swim

    Payment is taken at the pool - cash or check accepted. You do not need to pre-register. Drop in when your schedule allows. Two lanes will be available for lap swim. *Saturday afternoon open swim will resume in September.

    Private Lessons for Competitive Swimmers

    These lessons will be detailed technique sessions for competitive swimmers ages 12 and older. Swimmers will identify a specific stroke or aspect of swimming (starts, turns, breakouts, etc.) and the sessions will be dedicated to not only identifying areas of opportunity, but making corrections and providing guidance on how to implement them in their everyday swimming. It is recommended to register for a minimum of two to three lessons since detailed corrections take time, focus and repetition. Lesson fee is $90 per 30 minute lesson.

    Each swimmer must register individually. Please register online to add your name to the waitlist. Due to high demand for these lessons, you/your student may take only 4 private or semi-private lessons this Summer season. You must pay for the complete session, no reimbursement for missed lessons. Lessons will be scheduled in order by date registration is received. We will connect with you to coordinate a time that works based on schedule availability. You will be charged for the lessons once they are scheduled.     Swim Lessons: Level 1

    If you are a new family to Orono Community Education’s swimming lessons, we encourage you to schedule a swimming pre-assessment to determine the best level for your swimmer. Pre-assessments take place at the Orono pool. Instructors will guide your swimmer through a set of skills in a 15-minute period. Summer pre-assessments will take place in early March 2024. • Fall 2024 pre-assessments will take place in early August 2024. • Contact Tara St. Martin to schedule a pre-assessment at tara.st.martin@orono.k12.mn.us. • Note: Attending a pre-assessment does not guarantee a spot in lessons. Spots fill quickly. Please limit registration to one swim camp per child for Summer. Introduction to Water Skills MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD. No Prerequisites. Tentative in and around water, uncomfortable submerging head and not yet floating independently. Course Content: Helps participants feel comfortable in the water. Skills covered include: bobbing, retrieving objects underwater, front and back glides, back float, tread water using arms and hands, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, bob 3 times then safely exit the water. (Participants can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 3 seconds and recover to a vertical position. (This part of the assessment can be performed with support.) Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. For questions about what level your child should register for, refer to our descriptions. Locker rooms will not be available for use. Swimmers should arrive already prepared to swim.

Fundamental Aquatics Skills Course Content: Gives participants success with fundamental skills. Skills covered include: front, jellyfish and tuck floats, roll from front to back and back to front, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, treading of water, combined arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to vertical position. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. Sign up for Level 2 if: • Comfortable in the water • Submerges head • Floats independently Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. Stroke Development Course Content: Builds on skills with practice in deeper water. Skills covered include: headfirst entries from side in sitting and kneeling positions, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, survival float, flutter, dolphin and scissors kick, front crawl, elementary backstroke, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards. Sign up for Level 3 if: • Comfortable in deep water • Swims at least 5 yards on front with a coordinated stroke independently • Swims at least 5 yards on back with a coordinated stroke independently Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. Skills covered include: headfirst entries from side in compact and stride positions, swim under water, feet first surface dive, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, flutter and dolphin kicks on back and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards. Sign up for Level 4 if: • Comfortable in deep water • Swims at least 15 yards coordinated: front crawl, back crawl and knows dolphin kick and breaststroke kick. Exit skills: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 5 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 25 yards. Sign up for Level 5 if: • Comfortable in deep water • Swims at least 25 yards of the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke • Swims 15 yards coordinated of the following strokes: breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly LEVEL 6 - Swimming and Skill Proficiency Course Content: Students will learn to swim with ease and efficiency, and gain the ability to swim smoothly over greater distances. Skills covered include: shallow angle dive from the side, surface dives, front and back flip turns, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, standard scull, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit skills: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 5 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 25 yards.
