  • 55+ Driver Discount Program

    IMPORTANT NOTE! Registration for this course is not taken through Orono Community Education. For more information and to register for this course, go to mnsafetycenter.org or call TOLL FREE 1(888)-234-1294. This driver discount program is a state-approved accident prevention/insurance discount course that is open to the public. Pre-registration is required. This class is taught by a MN Highway Safety & Research Center certified instructor. By utilizing the most up-to-date research in the field, participants will be provided the latest information in regard to driver and traffic safety, new laws, and vehicle technology. Persons ages 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a 10% discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. First time participants must complete the initial four hours of training and a four-hour refresher class every three years to maintain the 10% discount.

    A Tex Mex Fiesta

    We’ll begin with empanadas, pastries filled with beef, tomatoes, potatoes, and herbs. flautas are next, with chicken in a jalapeno/garlic paste and fried crisp in a corn tortillas. We’ll then prepare authentic Mexican rice with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and fresh cilantro along with Mexican style corn prepared with lime aioli, cayenne pepper, and cotija cheese. Fajitas follow with tender strips of marinated beef and chicken, with fresh sautéed bell peppers and onions wrapped in a warm tortilla shell. We’ll finish this fiesta with a Yucatan-style delight, fresh coconut blended with rich custard in a wonderful nutty crust, baked to a caramelly brown, and served with crème fraȋche. All ingredients and supplies for this class are included in the registration fee.

    Arm Crochet Blanket

    Craft the perfect throw blanket to snuggle up with this winter! Use just your arms, hands, and some jumbo-sized yarn to crochet a cozy 4’ x 5’ blanket. No prior crochet experience is needed, and best of all, you’ll complete your entire blanket in just one session! Please select and purchase approximately 220 yards of 7-Jumbo yarn in your favorite color before class.
  • Beginner Stained Glass Window

    Create a beautiful stained glass window approximately 8” x 10” in size. This class is for both beginner and experienced stained glass participants! The copper foil technique will be taught from cutting to assembly. The first night focuses on choosing a pattern and discussing colors of glass, equipment and layout. The other sessions will focus on assembling your stained glass window. Glass and materials are purchased directly from the instructor at class - approximately $65. Tool kits are provided. Please bring safety glasses to use while cutting and grinding glass. This class includes one free Saturday morning Open Studio visit. Call to register participants ages 14-17 (must attend with an enrolled adult).
  • Bjorn Cycling Trailside Repair

    Many possible issues and problems can occasionally occur when riding. In this class, we will discuss the topics of: flat tires, wheel issues, dropped chains, cleaning and lubing, replacing tires, and what to buy to handle these issues. This class format is a mix of hands on and lecture. Please leave your bikes at home for this class.
  • Bjorn Cycling Tune Up

    Many of your bike issues can be solved in this class! The major focus will be on identification of bicycle parts, trailside repair, shifting adjustments, brake adjustments, chain maintenance, how to repair/replace a tube (flat tire), and how to safety check your bike. We will also learn basic wheel truing, replacing a chain, and how to replace brake and shifting cables. Please bring a bike. This class is a great value that includes a tune up!

    Bonus Pilates

    Bonus Pilates is full-body Pilates strength training with a focus on your core. Receive the extra “bonus” using props such as weights, bands, and exercise balls, to strengthen all large muscle groups including your glutes, legs, arms, and shoulders.

    CPR, First Aid & AED

    This blended learning (online learning and in-person skills) session will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies. Successful participants will receive a two-year Red Cross certificate for Adult and Pediatric (infant and child) CPR, First Aid and AED. Register at least 10 days prior to the in-person skills date, as time is needed to complete the online learning portion PRIOR to testing in person for the skills. This will allow you the time to complete lessons at your own pace. You will need to provide the instructor with proof of online completion in order to take part in the skills testing. Additional details regarding online learning session will be sent via email. A personal email address is required to receive class content.     Learn the fundamentals of hand-drawn lettering on chalkboards, similar to the styles you’ve admired at coffee shops or events! The instructor will break down the steps, and show you how to master spacing, composition, and letter formation, regardless of your handwriting. You’ll also explore decorative flourishes to bring your designs to life. Leave with your own mini chalkboard to continue to practice at home! All materials are included in the cost.     Join us for a fun workshop, taught by Board & Brush, where you’ll craft a charming children’s growth ruler from wood - a keepsake that captures memories year after year! In this hands-on class, you’ll work with a 50-inch wooden board designed to hang on the wall and record your child’s height as they grow. Choose from three design themes: cheerful rainbows, playful balloons, or a simple, single-color finish. Stain options will be available at class.     If you want to learn how to create beautiful, healthy and colorful container gardens, this class is for you! Professional photographer and gardener, Michelle Mero Riedel, will help you discover fast growing, vigorous, nursery-quality plants with season long color. She’ll intersperse her discussions with image after image of beautiful combinations that are easily created. A detailed color handout of each container design recipe will be available with time for questions. Ask your favorite garden buddy to join you for this online discussion class and you can share the excitement and fun as you begin to plan your spring containers!

    Make take out a thing of the past and join Chef Tess as she guides you through the step-by-step process of creating her copycat Domino’s pizza, sauce, and chicken carbonara. All items will be made fresh from scratch! Interact with the instructor and the other participants in this fun, virtual environment. An ingredient list will be sent before the class, giving you plenty of time for shopping and preparation, and a recipe packet will be sent afterward. A Zoom link will also be provided prior to the class.

  • Fitness Punch Card

    Purchase a Fitness Punch Card and drop into any adult fitness class on your time and your schedule. This is the perfect option if you cannot commit to a full class or want to try multiple different types of classes. Punch cards are valid for 6 months. Purchase another card if you run out of punches! Punch cards are kept in the Activities Center Fitness Room (30 & 31). The punch card is NOT VALID for pickleball classes, aquatics programs, virtual classes, private lessons or open gyms. Senior and Activities Center Membership discounts can not be applied toward a Punch Card purchase. Please contact our office at 952-449-8350 to confirm that a class has enough enrollments to run before dropping in for the first time.
  • Fused Glass Garden Art

    Add a flash of color to your pots, planters, flowerbeds or garden! In this class, you will create a fused glass totem and stake. Additional items can be made during class for an extra material fee. Due to the fusing cycle, you will need to return to the studio the following Wednesday evening or make arrangements with the instructors to pick up your piece. A $20 material fee is payable to the instructor at the start of class.
  • Glass Mosaic Bird Bath

    Join us this spring to make a one-of-a-kind bird bath. In this class, you will decorate a terra-cotta drip tray with pieces of stained glass. The bird bath can be placed on the ground or on a wrought-iron stand (not included). Grouting will take place on the second day of class, and if weather permits, students will grout outdoors. A $20 material fee is payable to the instructor at the start of class. Register for the Glass Mosaic Terracotta Pot class on March 10 and 11 to create a matching stand for your bird bath!

    Add a personal touch to your pots this spring! With guided instruction, you will design, cut, glue, and grout your own unique mosaic pattern onto your pot. Choose from two different size pots for this project. All tools and materials are available at our glass studio. A $20 material fee is payable to the instructor at the start of class.     Hatha Yoga

    Recharge, restore, and reconnect the mind and body. This class combines slow flow Vinyasa and Hatha style yoga, which focuses on the pairing of poses and breathing. Poses will be held longer and are designed to build physical strength and mental endurance, ideally finding harmony in the mind and body. This focused and calming, yet challenging class, can be modified for all levels.
