Fall 2025

Love to read? Join the Orono Intermediate School Book Club for grades 3-5! We'll read a book by local author and Orono parent, Katie Phillips, to exercise reading and discussion skills while learning about Native American culture. Students will read the book on their own and then meet for discussion with fellow club members. Club members will get a special Meet & Greet with the Author to sign books! Come and join us on a reading adventure!

Book: The Disastrous Wrangel Island Expedition In 1921, Inupait seamstress Ada Blackjack joined a group of four white men who wanted to establish a trading post on Wrangel Island in the freezing Arctic Ocean. The explorers were stranded on the island when their return ship was forced to turn back due to ice. Facing harsh conditions and dwindling food supplies, the men died one by one, but Ada remained. Find out how she alone managed to survive the disastrous expedition.

Books will be distributed at the first meeting on October 27th.

Christina Strey-Wells is an English teacher by trade with a decade of classroom experience teaching middle and high school students and sharing her love of reading with them. She like, really LOVES to read! She is an Orono mom of three and spends her time volunteering at all of the Orono schools.
