A Hamilton 4th of July
In this patriotic class we will learn about the history of events leading up to the Fourth of July – our nation’s great summer celebration! We will learn about the Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers and other patriots. Discover daily lifestyles of the 1700’s. Did George Washington sign the Declaration of Independence? Did he really have wooden teeth? We will also create some fun craft projects – great decorations for your Fourth of July party! Sign up to be there in the “Room Where it Happens!” -
A Mannerly Manners® Escapade
This class is beyond “Please” and “Thank You!” Sign up to learn a skill-set that will influence your life more than anything else will. Mannerly Manners® teaches you to polish social skills with fun interactive activities. We will help you navigate life by teaching communication skills, table manners, how to take a phone message, write an impressive thank you note and more. Discussion format and fun role-play help you understand how to use manners to your advantage. Parents are invited to participate at no additional cost. -
Adventures in Geocaching
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played by adventure seekers using GPS devices. Locate hidden containers outdoors, called geocaches. Treasure hunters will be equipped with GPS devices and explore the Orono Schools campus while searching for the caches. STUDENTS MUST HAVE: long pants, sunscreen, bug spray and water each day in order to participate. -
Adventures in Space & Time
Travel in time with Doctor Who in the Tardis. During our travels as his companions, we will visit a few episodes from this popular British television show. Explore history and learn about people, aliens and times – past and present! We will create small craft projects reflecting our journeys and will keep a record of our travels with a passport. Fezzes and sonic screwdrivers are optional. -
Babysitter Training
Get job training to transform that once-in-a-while babysitting job into a summer and after school business. This class will provide the information and skills necessary to become a Red Cross certified babysitter. Learn about the basics of child development so you can better understand how to work and play with children. Learn how to be safe and responsible when caring for children in the absence of parents or guardians. Take home a babysitter handbook. Students must be 11 years-old-by the last day of class. -
Baker Day Camp
Join us for a fun week at the beach! Enjoy games, playground time, swimming and a picnic lunch with friends. We may even spend some time fishing. A waterfront certified lifeguard will be on staff. Bring a bag lunch. More details will be sent out prior to the first day of camp. If it is raining in the morning before day camp begins, we will cancel for the day. If steady rain begins or severe weather is expected after we have started for the day, parents will be contacted to come pick up students. -
Beginner Kendama
Using kendama, an ancient Japanese juggling toy, students can reach their full potential through growth mindset and mindfulness practices. We’ll play games and learn the skills and history of this fast growing sport all while using self-reflection to track our growth. Every student receives a kendama. -
Camp Entrepreneur
Reveal your millionaire mindset and passion for entrepreneurship! This fun-filled hands-on camp provides key business ideas and strategies through experiential activities and creative play. Through marketing, sales and finance games and activities, learn how to bring a business concept into reality. Make “Entrepreneur Bucks” throughout the camp, earn interest and turn the money you make into exciting prizes. Whether you’re born a born entrepreneur or an entrepreneur in the making, this camp will offer invaluable skills for success in life. -
Circus Fanatics
Calling all circus fanatics! Create circus-themed artwork and learn about the various skills celebrated in this performance that has been around for nearly 250 years! Tight ropes? Elephants balancing on balls? Lions jumping through hoops? We’ll cover it all and end the week watching The Greatest Showman, a PG-rated movie that will tie all of our circus filled-fun together! -
Conquer Ninja Gym & Elm Creek Park
Experience being a Ninja Warrior for the day! Try all the obstacles with coach guidance, explore through free time and then get to compete against your friends. After our Ninja adventures we will head to Elm Creek Park for lunch and enjoy one the biggest play areas in the state. Bring a bag lunch. Friday, July 20 Rainbow Park Leave - 9:00 am Return - 3:00 pm Holbrook Park Leave - 9:20 am Return - 3:20 pm Important Field Trip Information • Departure locations: Rainbow Park, 1500 Rainbow Avenue, Maple Plain Holbrook Park, 310 Harrington Drive, Long Lake * Trips are chaperoned by playground program staff with a ratio of 6:1 or less. * No refunds will be given after the trip has occurred. * In case of inclement weather, we will notify you if the trip has been cancelled. * Lunch - details listed with each trip destination. * Bus departure times are exact...BE EARLY! * REGISTRATION DEADLINE is Monday the week of the trip. Registrations will NOT be taken at the bus departure locations. * Trip Appropriate Attire & Planning: No flip flops on walking/amusement park trips. Create Your Own Board Game
Before the digital age, people used to play board games. You will play various board games like Battleship, Monopoly, Life, Clue, Risk and Chutes and Ladders to brainstorm ideas. Work with your friends to create your own board game complete with rules while building literacy, critical thinking and problem solving skills. We will then play the games we created. Instead of downloading, lets unplug! -
Empowering Kids
Are you interested in contributing to your community? Service projects empower kids with responsibility and foster compassion toward others. Learn about the Meals on Wheels program and decorate place mats to be included with the meal delivery. Discover what it means to be a veteran and write thank you letters to our local heroes. Explore possible ways to give back to patients at local hospitals or animals at nearby shelters. -
Fairy Garden Workshop - Parent & Child
Children and parents or grandparents will work together to create a unique miniature fairy garden that can be cared for year-round! Make the garden with soil, fairy figures, fairy plants and accessories like stepping stones. Have fun with this enchanting, special project at Gregor Farm & Greenhouse. You’ll go home with a beautiful garden and great memories! -
Finding Cinderella
Popcorn and movies – what could be more fun? We will discover the essence of Cinderella by viewing four age-appropriate family movies that tell the story of Cinderella in different ways. We will also explore the origins and history of the legend of Cinderella. You will see Cinderella in a whole different light! Each prince or princess will get a crown! -
Geocaching & Biking
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played by adventure seekers using GPS devices. Locate hidden containers outdoors, called geocaches. Treasure hunters will be equipped with GPS devices and ride their bikes to search for the caches. We will bike from the school to Baker Park in Independence. Bikes can be kept secure at school for the week. Before class we recommend bike tune-ups (air in tires, chains tightened and greased). We also recommend bikes with gears. STUDENTS MUST HAVE: bike helmets, long pants, sunscreen, bug spray and water each day in order to participate. -
Great Green Gardens
Spend fun-filled days exploring the world of gardening! We will learn about the systems that allow our plants to flourish. Students will experience gardening through hands-on learning activities! Spend time learning about the local efforts for community gardens and the future school garden. We will create and paint our own mini garden box to take home. Taste a variety of vegetables and herbs then decide what you will plant in your box. -
In the Mix - Sweet Treats
Explore the world of baking from scratch, and create delicious treats along the way. Baking is a fun hands-on activity and a great way to reinforce math skills! We will learn the fundamentals of baking and share a showstopper dessert with friends and family on the last day of class. Bring an apron and get ready for delicious fun! -
Life on Mars
What if the human race was forced to live on another planet? Let’s say that planet was Mars. How would you survive? Well, that’s up to you and your friends! As a team you must create a plan of survival for the human race. How would you grow food, get water or even find shelter? You will design and make models for your inventions that will assist humans while trying to sustain life on Mars. -
Musical Mayhem
Jam out and get inspired as we create one-of-a-kind musical instruments with common household materials! We will explore the world of music and creativity as students discover the possibilities in everyday materials and learn specific techniques for creating sound. Create and take home hand crafted instruments to continue practicing your musical abilities! -
Ninja Warrior
If you think you’ve got what it takes to be the next Ninja Warrior, join us in this fun-filled class! Test your strength and creativity as we explore the world of Ninja Warrior both indoors and outdoors. Create team and individual competitions that will be sure to bring out the inner warrior in everyone! -
Orono Olympic Games
Who says you have to be a professional athlete to show off your skills in the Olympics? Join us for a week of fun as we create never-before-seen obstacle courses and events for all ages in the Orono Olympic Games. Students will compete in relay races and individual activities while learning the value of teamwork, creativity and the history behind the Olympic Games! -
Spartan Day Camp
Looking for fun, adventure and time with friends? This one-day camp experience is for you! Participants will engage in both outdoor games and gym time. Play giant yard games and go scouting for animals and insects on a hike through the Orono Nature Center on campus. You will also express yourself through art and play water games at the Orono Pool. Join us for a fun-filled summer day! Held rain or shine! -
Spartan Zone
Looking for something fun to do with summer afternoons? Join us for a unique program that focuses on promoting positive relationships with peers and developing independence. Each week, our four days of fun will include activities, competitions, service and more. On TOURNAMENT DAY we will compete against one another in activities like kickball, board games, card games and more. On days devoted to SERVICE & LEADERSHIP we will join other groups for service projects on campus and locally. DISCOVERY DAY will feature opportunities to learn a skill, try something new or teach your peers about one of your hobbies. On ADVENTURE DAY our experiences will allow us to connect with one another. We will participate in activities both on and off campus. All participants and parents will be required to sign a behavior agreement prior to participation. Sign up for as many weeks as you wish. If your student has a morning class, you can register for Lunch Bunch between programs. -
Summer Chess Camp
Students will expand their knowledge of chess and develop their understanding of strategy through a variety of dynamic lessons. Included are: pins; forks; fried liver attack; queen sacrifices; basics of positional play; opening, middle and end game strategies; in-class tournament and more. We will have ‘down’ time to get our pulse pounding with outdoor or gym time.
