    Big Woods Experience

    Join us for an adventure through the Orono Schools nature areas. We will explore a vernal pond area to check out frogs, dragonflies, cavity nesting birds and the mammals that live in this habitat. We will venture to the lakeside area to observe our resident trumpeter swans, ospreys and smaller migratory birds. Discover the other creatures this unique habitat is home to as well. We will end our morning in the big woods, cooling off in the dark green canopy of oaks and maples and visiting our beautiful butterfly garden. Monarchs and many other butterfly species and pollinators use this garden as well.

    GoSolar! Kidz: Growing & Cooking with the Sun

    The sun is your best friend if you know how to use it! This class teaches how to cook with just the sun. Solar cooking bypasses traditional means of cooking. No electricity, gas, charcoal or wood is needed. Students will learn how to cook meals, dry food for preservation and purify water all with the sun. Students will build their own mini sun oven and take home a micro green plant.

    GoSolar! Kidz: Solar Power Your Drone

    Up, up and away! Enjoy fun remote control drones charged from solar power. Students will build a solar powered charging station for their drone. When their drone runs out of juice, they can simply charge it anywhere outdoors with their solar charging station. We will have a blast building and using real life tools such as solder irons, drills, etc. When students are done building, they will challenge other classmates with their drone. Take home a mini drone and a newly-built charging station.

    Magic School Bus: Animal Habitats

    Get on the bus with Ms. Frizzle and imagine being the size of the animals that live in different places around the world. What is it like to live in a stream or pond or even in a dark cave? What do we need to survive? We will also travel to an island that is being formed. Let’s imagine the first animals to arrive.

    Magic School Bus: Living Things

    Hop on the bus with Ms. Frizzle and discover the magical world of science. We will shrink to become plants and insects and even travel through the body as blood and food! Using a mix of literature, science, physical activities, art and cooking, we will explore the interconnections of our world.
  • Marsh Life

    Bring your rain boots and your curiosity as we explore the lakefront and its marshy edges. Here we will discover the dozens of species of small water creatures called macro invertebrates. We will catch some tadpoles and find the nesting areas of migratory birds such as the Baltimore Oriole and the Smaller American Redstart. As we work near the water’s edge, the osprey and bald eagle as well as the trumpeter swan family will keep us entertained. This habitat is loaded with many species of mammals, birds, insects and amphibians.
