    Lap Swim

    There are six lanes available for lap swim, and the diving well is accessible for self-guided aqua exercise. Morning lap swim is open to adults and students over 15 years of age. Afternoon lap swim is for ages 18 years or older. There will be pool supervision during afternoon lap, but no lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk. Check-in with your I.D. for the 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM lap swim at the Community Education office in the Education Link. Enter through Door E24.     Masters Swim

    U.S.M.S. is a national membership nonprofit that provides membership benefits to nearly 60,000 Masters swimmers across the country. It provides direct support to Masters Swimming clubs and workout groups. Structure and organization of USMS programs vary and are driven by factors such as pool availability, instructor or coach availability, community support, and finances. Coaches write workouts and provide feedback and instruction. Participants must register with US Masters Swimming at usms.org. The membership fee includes the US Masters and MN Masters registration fees.     Open Swim

    Open to adults and children. Children twelve and younger must be accompanied by an adult in the pool facility. Payment is taken at the pool - cash or check accepted; $6/individual, $18/family (up to 5 ppl), FREE for Orono Activities Center members (please scan in at the pool with your OAC membership card). Two lanes will be available for lap swim. Punch cards do not apply. No pre-registration required. Enter through Education Link door E24 to access the pool.   • Swim Lessons - Private/Semi-Private

    Private/Semi-Private Swim Lessons Each swimmer must register individually. Please register online to add your name to the waitlist. Lessons will be scheduled in order by the date registration is received. Once we have contacted all parties on the waiting list, we will offer up more lessons per family if they are available. We will connect with you to coordinate a time that works based on schedule availability. You will be charged for the lessons once they are scheduled. You must pay for the complete session, no reimbursement for missed lessons. Private Swim Lessons - $117/Four 30-minute lessons Semi-private lessons - $97/Four 30-minute lessons per participant Lessons available for this session will be Tuesday OR Thursday mornings 7:30, 8:00 OR 8:30am for a 30 minute session. Saturdays will also be available from 12:45 - 2:45 pm. Please register online at oronocommunityed.com to add your name to the waitlist. *If you were on the private lesson waiting list during previous brochure seasons, you'll need to re-register for the current season.     Swim Lessons: Level 1

    Introduction to Water Skills MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD. Tentative in and around water, uncomfortable submerging head and not yet floating independently. Course Content: Learn to Swim, Level 1helps participants feel comfortable in the water. Skills covered include: bobbing, retrieving objects underwater, front and back glides, back float, tread water using arms and hands, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side Travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times then safely exit the water. (Participants can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds and recover to a vertical position. (This part of the assessment can be performed with support.)     Swim Lessons: Level 2

    Fundamental Aquatics Skills MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD. Comfortable in water, submerges head and floats independently. Course Content: This level allows students to succeed in the fundamentals of aquatic skills. These skills include: front, jellyfish and tuck floats, roll from front to back and back to front, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, treading of water, combined arm and leg actions on front and back (working towards moving independently) and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to vertical position. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.     Swim Lessons: Level 3

    Stroke Development Comfortable in deep water (5ft+), swims at least 5 yards on front with a coordinated stroke independently, swims at least 5 yards on back with a coordinated stroke independently. Course Content: Builds on fundamental skills with practice and distance and introduces skills used in deeper water. Skills include: headfirst entries from side in sitting and kneeling positions, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, survival float, flutter, dolphin and scissors kick, front crawl, elementary backstroke, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Jump into deep water from the side, tread or float for 1 minute then proceed to an exit point by swimming the front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 15 yards. Push off in a streamline position then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, then swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards before exiting the water.     Swim Lessons: Level 4

    Stroke Improvement Comfortable in deep water, swims at least 15 yards coordinated: front crawl, back crawl and knows breaststroke and dolphin kick. Course Content: Develops confidence and improves on Level 3 skills. Skills include: headfirst entries from side in compact and stride positions, swim under water, feet first surface dive, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, flutter and dolphin kicks on back and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards. Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program.     Swim Lessons: Level 5/6

    Stroke Refinement & Advanced Options Comfortable in deep water, swims at least 25 yards coordinated: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly. Course Content: Develops confidence and improves on Level 4 skills with an emphasis on distance, time and safety. Skills include:diving, treading (5 mins) and sculling, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, open and flip turns. Exit Skills: Perform a shallow-angle dive in deep water, swim 50 yards, front crawl, and then elementary backstroke for 50 yards with efficient turning styles. Breastroke for 25 yards, change direction, back crawl 25 yards, use turn styles. Submerge 3 - 5 body lengths underwater, return to surface and exit water.     Swim Lessons: Parent & Child

    Parent & Child AGES 6 MONTHS - 2 YEARS *A parent/adult is required to accompany each child in the water. Enjoy swimming with your child while building swimming readiness by emphasizing fun and safety in the water. Course Content: This class familiarizes young children to the water while increasing comfort through caretaker/child activities, water toys and class games. Caretakers will learn safety information and techniques to help orient children as they explore their first experiences in the pool.     Swim Lessons: Preschool Level 1 - Parent & Child

    Preschool Level 1 AGES 3 - 5 YEARS OLD *A parent/adult MUST accompany the child in the water. For inexperienced or cautious preschool swimmers. Course Content: The primary objective of this course is to orient children to the aquatic environment while helping to gain basic aquatic skills. Skills for this level may include: entering and exiting water using ramps, steps or side of pool, blowing bubbles in water, submerging mouth, nose and eyes, retrieving object under water, glides, floats, arm/leg and tredding actions, combining these movements on front and back. Exit Skills: Enter the water independently, travel for 5 yards (walking, "swimming" or moving along gutter), submerge mouth and blow bubbles (3 sec), and safely exit the water. While in shallow water, glide on front for 2 body lengths, roll to back and float for 3 seconds, then recover to a vertical position.     Swim Lessons: Preschool Level 3

    Preschool Level 3 AGES 3 - 5 YEARS OLD For the preschool swimmer who is comfortable floating, submerging, and swimming independently. Course Content: This level is designed to increase proficiency and build aquatic skills learned in Preschool Levels 1 and 2 by providing additional guidance with increased distances and time. Skills covered in this level include: fully submerging, holding breath for greater amounts of time, rotary breathing, floats, traveling on font and back with combined arm and leg actions and changing directions while swimming. Exit Skills: Step from side, chest deep water, push off from bottom and into a treading/floating position then swim for 5 body lengths to exit water. Move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to front and then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm/leg actions for 5 body lengths, roll to back and float (15 sec), roll to front and swim back.
